Hadestown is a musical with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. It tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial version of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the cold, ...
Following productions in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and London, England, the show premiered on Broadway in 2019. The Broadway production received critical acclaim. At the 73rd Tony Awards, Hadestown received 14 nominations (the most that year) and won eight, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.Despite hearing about the never-ending labor endured by the factory workers, Eurydice is intrigued by the rich praises sung by the Fates as well as the promise of protection that Hadestown offers ("Way Down Hadestown"). The cold weather returns and Eurydice searches for food and firewood, urging Orpheus to finish his song ("A Gathering Storm").After Persephone and Hades argue ("Chant"), Hades leaves Hadestown to find someone who will appreciate its safety and security. He comes across a desperate Eurydice and invites her to come to Hadestown ("Hey, Little Songbird") and the Fates urge Eurydice to join him ("When the Chips Are Down").With the cold surging and an empty stomach, Eurydice sees no other choice except following Hades. She bids goodbye to Orpheus before heading to Hadestown as the Fates chastise the audience for judging her for choosing self-interest over love ("Gone, I'm Gone").Orpheus discovers Eurydice's disappearance, and decides to rescue her from Hadestown. He sets off on his journey using Hermes' instructions on how to get to Hadestown without the use of the train ("Wait for Me").

The inimitable folk singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell combined elements of those tales in her story of a singer, Orpheus, who wants to transform the world with his music, and his romance with a starving girl, Eurydice, who makes a fateful pact with the evil industrialist Hades.Hadestown has had a long and extraordinary journey, beginning as a passion project by Mitchell and a concept album, then developed into a full stage musical, and travelling from Off Broadway via Canada and London to Broadway and finally the West End. Along the way, fans of unique and exquisitely crafted musical theatre have fallen head over heels in love with it.Hadestown takes its inspiration from two Ancient Greek myths. One is Orpheus and Eurydice, about a musician who journeys into the Underworld in search of his lost love. The other is Hades and Persephone, which sees the latter spending half the year in that Underworld with her devilish husband – that’s why, legend has it, we get six months of wintry weather.
The Tony-winning musical welcomed a new principal cast to the Walter Kerr September 2.
Joining the long-running hit are Disney star Morgan Dudley (Descendants: The Rise of Red), who made her Broadway debut in Jagged Little Pill, as Eurydice; two-time Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling in his Broadway debut as Hermes; Broadway favorite Rebecca Naomi Jones (Stereophonic, Oklahoma!, Passing Strange) as Persephone; South Pacific Tony winner Paulo Szot, last on Broadway in & Juliet, as Hades; and West End Next to Normal breakout star Jack Wolfe, whose screen credits include Shadow and Bone and The Witcher, in his Broadway debut as Orpheus.Singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s folk- and jazz-infused musical layers the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with that of Hades and Persephone, intertwining the actions—and consequences—of gods and mortals. The Tony Award-winning Best Musical Hadestown welcomed an entirely new principal cast to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre September 2.Hadestown recently starred Ali Louis Bourzgui as Orpheus, Phillip Boykin as Hades, Daniel Breaker as Hermes, Lana Gordon as Persephone, and Myra Molloy as Eurydice, who all took their final bows August 31.

Hadestown is a version of the underworld - an alternate version made to fit this reimagined setting. The workers are effectively dead in a way because Hades forces them to work tirelessly in the factories to build stuff for his wall.I've also seen you ask why they couldn't just phone each other, once again Hadestown is the afterlife so it'll be like phoning a ghost? Aka not fully possible aha it's like asking why can't you phone your dead relative.Hadestown, is the God of Death, and his domain of the underworld in the show is for the dead.Hadestown is a reimagined Underworld, where Hades is so consumed by greed and power that he wants to build a wall around his kingdom so nobody else can get in.

Jack Wolfe is right at home on Broadway. How can you tell? We spoke on September 4, two days after his debut performance in Hadestown, when he began to say, "I'm only four years" — before trailing off and giving a small, self-conscious laugh. "Four weeks into my time in New York.If it's any indication of what his career holds, many of his predecessors in the Hadestown role are Broadway regulars: Reeve Carney, Jordan Fisher, and Ali Louis Bourzgui, all of whom Wolfe has met, to name a few.It has yet to be announced how long the current Hadestown Broadway cast — which also includes Morgan Dudley, Kurt Elling, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Paulo Szot — will perform, but Wolfe hopes to stick around even after the inevitable end date comes around. "I'm just very, very glad to be here.By the time the show happened, I was able to control myself, mostly through looking into the eyes of [...] the entire company here who really made us feel okay. We had great talks with [director] Rachel Chavkin, and then we did the show, and it was an out-of-body experience, and also so exciting.
